Where to stay in Paris

The best Paris area for your first visit

Choose a neighbourhood that matches your priorities—not simply the first hotel listing you see. Compare atmosphere, transport and first-day convenience before selecting your stay.

Quick recommendation

Start with what matters most

Le Marais suits atmosphere and walkability. Saint-Germain offers classic elegance. Opéra is excellent for convenience, while Montparnasse works well for rail connections and practical stays.

Le Marais

Best for walkability, history and atmosphere

A strong first-visit choice for travellers who want historic streets, museums, cafés and evening dining close at hand.

First-day consideration: Useful central connections, though the final route may involve a short walk on older streets.

Saint-Paul on Métro line 1, Chemin Vert on line 8 and Rambuteau on line 11 cover different sides of the district. From CDG, take RER B to Châtelet–Les Halles and continue by line 1 or taxi; from Orly, line 14 to Châtelet followed by line 1 is usually the simplest rail route. Double rooms commonly begin around €180 and can exceed €450 in boutique properties. Avoid Le Marais if you need large rooms, coach-door access or a very quiet base on weekend evenings.

Saint-Germain-des-Prés

Best for classic Paris and polished stays

Choose the Left Bank for galleries, celebrated cafés and elegant walks towards the Seine, the Louvre and Luxembourg Gardens.

First-day consideration: A comfortable base when you value central access and do not mind changing transport depending on your airport.

Use Saint-Germain-des-Prés on Métro line 4, Mabillon on line 10 or Odéon on lines 4 and 10; some hotels are also walkable from RER B at Saint-Michel–Notre-Dame. CDG passengers can use RER B, while Orly passengers can take line 14 to Châtelet and change to line 4. Expect roughly €200–€500+ for a well-located double room. It is a weaker fit for strict budgets, travellers seeking large modern rooms or anyone who wants the simplest possible door-to-door airport transfer.

Opéra

Best for transport, shopping and convenience

A practical central district with major department stores, broad avenues and useful connections to stations and airport transport.

First-day consideration: One of the simplest choices for travellers prioritising a straightforward first-day connection.

Opéra station serves Métro lines 3, 7 and 8, while Auber provides RER A connections. From CDG, RER B to Châtelet–Les Halles and RER A to Auber works well; from Orly, line 14 to Madeleine leaves a short walk or one-stop connection. Typical central rooms range from about €170 to €450+, rising sharply during major events. Choose elsewhere if you want village-like streets, late-night quiet or a neighbourhood removed from department-store crowds.

Montparnasse

Best for practical value and rail connections

A lively base with restaurants, metro access and useful links for travellers continuing towards western or southern France.

First-day consideration: Particularly convenient when your itinerary includes Montparnasse station or an early onward train.

Montparnasse–Bienvenüe connects Métro lines 4, 6, 12 and 13 and sits beside Gare Montparnasse. From CDG, RER B to Denfert-Rochereau followed by line 4 or 6 is practical; from Orly, line 14 to Bercy and line 6 reaches the area. Rooms often fall around €130–€300, making this the best-value option in this comparison. Do not choose it if stepping outside into the postcard centre or walking to the Marais is more important than transport and room value.

The DayOneFlyer difference

Connect the airport, hotel and first evening

  1. 01

    Confirm the airport

Check whether you arrive at Charles de Gaulle, Orly or another regional airport before comparing transfers.

  2. 02

    Choose the final connection

Consider stairs, luggage and the last walk from the station—not only the fastest advertised route.

  3. 03

    Keep check-in day local

Plan a café, riverside walk or landmark close to your hotel rather than crossing the entire city.

Cost guidance: Rail is generally lower cost. Official taxi fares may use regulated zones; confirm the current rate, supplements and correct pickup point before travel.

02

Early check-in & luggage hold options
